Email OTP Verification for Confirmed User Access
Confirm that users can access the email address they provide by sending a
six-digit one-time code before registration, onboarding, or identity
verification continues.
- Email ownership confirmation
- Six-digit OTP codes
- Rate-limited verification
- Connected verification results

Confirm Email Access Before the Journey Continues
An entered email address does not prove that the user can access its inbox. Email OTP verification adds a direct access check before the address becomes part of a registration, onboarding, or identity verification workflow.

Close Critical Email Verification Gaps
An Address Alone Proves Nothing
A user submits an email address during registration or onboarding, but no check confirms they can receive messages at that address. The email may be correct, or it may belong to someone else entirely.
- Address submitted
- Inbox access unconfirmed
- OTP not completed
The Wrong Address Can Break the Journey
A mistyped address, an old inbox, or a forwarding-only alias means important messages never arrive. Recovery options shrink and the workflow stalls.
- Mistyped address
- Wrong inbox
- Confirmation unavailable
Earlier Contact Data May Not Be Enough
Account recovery, credential changes, and high-risk actions may require re-verifying the email address, even when the user previously provided it. A single earlier confirmation does not cover every future step.
- Account recovery
- Contact-detail changes
- Sensitive customer actions

Email OTP Verification
in Three Steps
Confirm access to a user’s email address through a short PIN-based verification flow. The user receives the code, enters it in the verification screen, and validates it before continuing.
Get a Code
The user clicks Email Validation and sees a message confirming that a PIN code has been sent to their email. They open the email in their inbox and copy the code.

Enter the Code
The user returns to the verification flow and pastes the PIN code into the provided boxes.

Validate
The user clicks Validate to confirm access to the email address and continue the customer journey.

Email OTP Verification in Practice
Before okID, we spent too much time verifying customers manually at events. As our business and customer base grew, we expected to hire more people just to keep up with the workload. okID made the process much easier by automating key verification checks, reducing manual work, and helping our team onboard more customers and event staff without increasing headcount.

Still have a question? Ask a Question
What Is Email OTP Verification?
Email OTP verification confirms access to an email address by sending the user a one-time code that must be entered during the verification journey.
How Does okID Verify an Email Address?
The user provides an email address, receives a six-digit code, and submits the code to confirm access to the inbox.
Does Email OTP Verification Prove Legal Identity?
No. It confirms access to the submitted inbox at the time of verification, but it does not independently establish the user’s legal identity.
Can Email Verification Be Added to Another okID Workflow?
Yes. Email Verification is an optional module that can be used alongside the other modules required for the verification journey.
Are Email Verification Requests Rate Limited?
Yes. The official okID module documentation identifies Email Verification as rate limited.
Can okID Detect Reported Stolen Passports?
Yes. Supported Dutch passports can be checked to determine whether they have been officially reported stolen.
How Does the Email Verification API Work?
Your server creates a verification with a server-side API key and opens the hosted journey for the user.
How Are Completed Results Returned?
Completed verification results can be retrieved through the API and delivered through the webhook configured for the API key.
When Should Businesses Use Email OTP Verification?
Use it before registration, onboarding, identity verification, account activation, recovery, or another step that depends on confirmed email access.
